Details about the alleged defective “idle stop” feature on 2016-2020 Honda Pilot®, Honda Odyssey®, Acura TLX®, or Acura MDX® autos

Consumers allege that certain Honda® and Acura® vehicles are equipped with a defective “idle stop” feature that causes the cars to suddenly become temporarily disabled.

According to victims, 2016 to 2020 model year Honda Pilot®, Honda Odyssey®, Acura TLX®, or Acura MDX® vehicles are equipped with a feature designed to shut off the engine when the brake pedal is fully applied and the vehicle is idling, and then restart the engine when the brake pedal is released.

However, for the vehicles at issue, the engine idle-stop function is allegedly unreliable and may fail to restart the engine when the brake pedal is released.

If true, this defect presents serious safety concerns as drivers and passengers can be left stranded in the middle of traffic while attempting to restart their vehicles.

The complaints state that “The vehicle will, suddenly and without notice, become inoperable and undrivable wherever it rests, whether at a red light or stop sign, in the middle of an intersection while making a left-hand turn, or on an entrance ramp to a highway,” claiming disabled vehicles’ engines often fail to restart for several minutes and sometimes must be jump-started.

The Consumer Assistance Team urges consumers who purchased or leased a 2016 to 2020 model year Honda Pilot®, Honda Odyssey®, Acura TLX®, or Acura MDX® equipped with the known defective “idle stop” feature to get a free, private case evaluation.

Why Honda may be responsible for giving compensation to those driving the 2016-2020 Honda Pilot®, Honda Odyssey®, Acura TLX®, or Acura MDX® autos

Consumers believe that Honda® allegedly knowingly sells vehicles with defective idle-stop features that fail to work properly and put the safety of drivers and passengers at risk.

Consumers also contend that Honda® has allegedly had “longstanding knowledge” of the alleged idle-stop defect yet continues selling vehicles containing the idle stop feature and fails to disclose it to its customers.

Those consumers filing claims against the automaker do so under the following beliefs:

  1. Honda is allegedly guilty of unjust enrichment and fraudulent concealment/omission, among other things;
  2. Honda is allegedly in violation of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (preventing manufacturers from using disclaimers on warranties in an unfair or misleading manner); and,
  3. Honda is allegedly in violation of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act (protecting the consuming public and legitimate business enterprises from those who engage in unfair methods of competition, or unconscionable, deceptive, or unfair acts or practices in the conduct of any trade or commerce).

Hundreds of complaints from consumers alleging that although Honda® has marketed the affected vehicles as safe, consumers were never informed of the “significant safety risk” stemming from the idle stop defect.

The Consumer Assistance Team believes that consumers who purchased or leased a 2016 to 2020 model year Honda Pilot®, Honda Odyssey®, Acura TLX®, or Acura MDX® equipped with the known defective “idle stop” feature should receive compensation for losses.
