The Consumer Assistance Team encourages eligible victims to request a free, private case evaluation from our law team — eligible victims must have:

Been a female over the age of 18 at the time of incarceration
Been incarcerated at one of the New York female correctional facilities listed below
Been sexually abused by a prison employee/staff member, a corrections officer, or a probation/parole officer
Made a formal report outlining the abuse
Be able to reasonably identify their abuser(s)

A new federal lawsuit alleges that male prison guards in New York State's female correctional facilities -- including two prisons in Western New York -- assaulted and raped female inmates and jail officials covered it up.

In fact, female prisoners incarcerated at the following New York women's correctional facilities allegedly suffered serious sexual abuse at the hands of prison employee/staff members, corrections officers, and probation/parole officers:

Albion Correctional Facility
Bayview Correctional Facility
Beacon Correctional Facility
Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women
Lakeview Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility
MDC Brooklyn
MCC New York
New York Women's House of Detention
Taconic Correctional Facility
Willard Drug Treatment Campus

While most of the assaults cited in the indictments occurred in 2016, prosecutors have suggested that the pattern may have begun years before.

The State Assembly overwhelmingly passed the Adult Survivors Act, which enables adult victims, those 18 or older at the time of the alleged abuse, a one-time opportunity to file civil lawsuits in New York, even if any statutes of limitations have run out.

The bill mirrors New York’s Child Victims Act and gives adult survivors a year to file suit.

The elements of the Adult Survivor’s Act include the following:

The measure is described as an act of “restorative justice;”
It allows victims some level of accountability and recompense; and,
It deters individuals and institutions from turning a blind eye to the future.

State lawmakers lengthened the statutes of limitations for many offenses in 2019–however, those changes did not apply retroactively, which advocates of the Adult Survivors Act said made the bill necessary.

The Consumer Assistance Team believes that victims of alleged sexual abuse at New York women’s correctional facilities should receive justice and compensation for pain and suffering.

TIME-SENSITIVE! The statute of limitations for filing a claim means that victims must act quickly in order to seek justice and potential compensation!
