What are Some of the Symptoms of Body Dysmorphia?

Body dysmorphic disorder gives the victim an excessive desire to focus on their body appearance and image -- including repeatedly checking the mirror or grooming, as well as seeking the reassurance of others -- often for many hours each day. (Source: The Mayo Clinic)

Any perceived flaws and repetitive behaviors may cause the sufferer a huge amount of distress, potentially impacting their ability to function normally in daily life.

In other instances, victims may elect to have numerous cosmetic procedures in an effort to try and "fix" the perceived flaws.

Any feelings of temporary satisfaction or a reduction in distress are quickly replaced by the former anxiety level which may lead to finding other ways to fix the perceived flaw.

Intense body dysmorphia may lead to the following serious health conditions:

  • Anxiety and social anxiety disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Major depression or mood disorders
  • Suicidal ideations
  • Eating disorders
  • Substance abuse
  • Other similar conditions

Is There a Connection Between Excessive Social Media and Body Dysmorphia?

Social media use doesn’t cause the psychological condition of body dysmorphia, but it certainly can enhance the risk potential.

Excessive exposure to social media sites that rely on user-generated imagery can encourage victims to come into contact with a variety of edited images that sets an almost impossible standard of acceptable attractiveness in both genders.

“Constant exposure to altered images can lead to an unhealthy pressure to achieve unrealistic body types, which can result in body dysmorphic behaviors,” reveals The Lexington Online.

Since the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, exposure to social media has the potential to increase dramatically, and their risk for psychological problems may increase along with it.

We offer psychological victims of excessive social media exposure a chance for justice -- including a free legal evaluation of their case and possible compensation in a court of law.
